What is your favorite word(s)?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : annarchy : One Thread

Sounds like a strange question, I know. But what is your favorite word(s) in your maternal language, or any other? Do you like words because they're fun to say, or because they feel a special way in your mouth when you say them? Or because of what they mean?

"Capable" is a good word. I like to use it when I'm feeling very good about myself. "I'm feeling very capable today." But for phonetic pleasures, I'll throw around a little random Spanish . . . mamacita. ;) Because it just rolls around . . . blehhh. English sucks.

This is a great question. Words, I love words. Just this morning, as I was driving my fiance to work we saw, at the side of the road, a woman who was plucking honesuckle blossoms off of a bush. Travis commented on how much he hated honeysuckle because the scent is cloying (hey, cloying is a great word, by the way). Anyway, I said, 'well, regardless of how you feel about the scent, you've just got to love that word 'honeysuckle'. Say it, it just sounds so erotic, doesn't it? Honeysuckle...mmm.'.
I also have a thing for certain words in Spanish that have no real direct translation in English and often I'll get fixated on a word in either language and overuse it for a month or two.

This is a great topic! Okay.. In English, my favorite words would have to be Serendipity (because the way the syllables bounce makes it sound really weird) and Labyrinth (because it just has an eerie sound to it). I also love French words, just because they seem so elegant to me, and in Arabic (my grandfather speaks it), I like "Shukran" (thank you) because he says it really funny, and it was the first Arabic word I ever learned.

...but my all-time fave is "KEISTER"...

Normally a noun meaning "butt", it can also be used as a verb, meaning "to fall, wipe out while skiing, snowboarding, etc...esp if the victim actually ends up on his"

Usage: "Whoah!! Kong really keistered that time !!"

Mmm, I love words. I'm a sucker for words. Someone can treat me horribly, as long as they disguise it by whispering sweet nothings into my ear. As I've learned.

Anyway, I like the word 'drown'. I think it's the imagery. I like the word 'mint', like when it's used as an adjective, as in "That shirt is mint." Hmm. I like big words, but naturally I can't think of any offhand. I'm always the one using big words.

I'm sure I'll be back once I think of more. ;)

I like a couple. :) I'll have to agree with you, Anna, on the 'smile', because my face and the face of the person I'm talking to just lights up and I feel happy (unless it's used sarcastically, as in "you smile and you're dog food *grr!*").

I also like 'cunt', because it's so raw and powerful, and really screams female out at me. I know it's derogatory or whatever, but I love the way it sounds. 'Fuck', as well.

'Lovely' as well, because whenever I say it and hear it it reminds me of Eliza Dolittle in "My Fair Lady" signing "wouldn't it...be lah-ver- leeeee..." in Covent Garden.

And 'silly', because it's innocent while being...well, silly!

As well as anything in Latin, because I'm taking it (got an A! WOO!) and I recognize things and can translate now. :) Hee hee hee.

There's probably 3,000 others, but I can't think of them right now.
