What was that thing on Carter's hand in "Be Patient"?

Dumb question, but, what was that thing taped to the back of Carter's hand in the scene where he was in his room in "Be Patient"? It looked like a AA battery or something. But it wasn't hooked up to anything. Does anyone know what it was for?

It's called a saline lock ( or block, i can't remember)...if you're in the hospital for a long time, and need iv meds or fluids, they give you one so you're not constantly hooked up to an iv pole.
