LITTLE ROCK - A Philadelphia-bound American Airlines plane made an emergency landing at Little Rock National Airport on Thursday after the pilot noticed a problem with an engine.

Flight 1216, which had departed Dallas-Fort Worth at 9:26 a.m., landed in Little Rock at 10:38 a.m., said American Airlines spokesman John Hotard.

"The captain reported a low oil quantity in the number three engine, so as a precaution he shut it down and diverted to Little Rock,'' Hotard said.

Witnesses said landing by the Boeing 727 was smooth and no one was injured, according to Little Rock television station KARK. The plane was carrying 93 passengers and a crew of six, Hotard said.

The plane was taken out of service and was being inspected Thursday to determine why the right rear engine was low on oil, Hotard said. The plane also has engines on the left rear and the top near the tail and can fly with only one working engine, he said.

A spare plane - a McDonnell Douglas MD-80 - and a crew from Chicago was flying to Little Rock to pick up the passengers and take them to Philadelphia, Hotard said.

The flight originally was to have arrived in Philadelphia at 1:28 p.m. Hotard said the passengers would be several hours late.
