ATI AIW 128 & ASF/WMV format

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

To all ATI AIW128 users,

Window Media Encoder 4.1 & filters from Window Media Encoder 7 make ASF file unbelievable good, which surpass even the best VCD from high price capture cards and even commercial VCD! The source is from VHS tape using composite input. Using MPeg4 V3 and video bitrate at 1358Kbps and Mpeg3 Layer 3 52Kbps 44.1Khz Stereo. The file size is the same as VCD at 2.0 compliant format of 10Mb per min but the quality is equivalent to XVCD or HVCD. You can reduce the video bitrate to 1000Kbps and get commercial VCD result at 2/3 the file size of that typical VCD. The quality of the video is stunningly good comparing with homemade VCD...no blockiness from VHS & composite! Microsoft has done a good thing this time around...congrats those guys from microsoft for outstanding codecs (window media encoder 7 filtering does make a major different to Mpeg4 V3 codecs)! Now I am waiting for the equipment manufacturers and CD softwares firms to support ASF/WMV format just like those that support MP3. This wait may be forever, but the format is well worth the wait. Alternative is to get a computer to TV converter so that i can watch the ASF on my big screen TV :))

If you want to get great playback Use the media player that origionally came with windows 98 if you have upgraded to media player 7 then you will find it in the windows directory.
