Soutern Railway Trackage Rights on ACL

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ACL and SAL Railroads Historical Society : One Thread

Does anyone out there have photographs of Southern Railway trains on the ACL mainline between Savannah and Jacksonville? Southern had trackage rights between these two points on a through run basis only. The wreck at Fleming GA was a result of a Southern freight being rearended by the ACL Miamian. Anything???

Michael

The Southern's trackage rights actually started at Hardeeville, SC which is located across the river approximately 5 miles to the north of Savannah. Their line from Columbia SC through Allendale SC joined the ACL at that point. At one time there was an interlocking tower (ACL design as I recall) at Hardeeville controlling this junction. I beleive one of the two Southern Historical Societies has a photo of this tower though I haven't had much luck in getting a copy. As for photos of Southern trains on ACL trackage you might want to contact George Eichelburger with the Southern HS (not the one in Augusta GA). He was researching this same topic last summer and I seem to recal he had located a rare photo or two. You may try contacting him to inquire about any photographs. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
