NORTH BAY, Ontario (July 30, 2000 8:11 a.m. EDT http://www.nandotimes.com)

A United Airlines jumbo jet with 300 passengers made an emergency landing Saturday at a small Ontario airport.

The 747 aircraft was traveling from Hong Kong to New York when the pilot alerted the airport in North Bay, about 200 miles north of Toronto, that the aircraft had an in-flight emergency, police said.

The jet landed safely, and no one was hurt.

Police said the pilot believed there was a problem with the aircraft's hydraulic system.

A United plane was en route from Chicago to pick up the passengers around 3 a.m. Sunday and take them to New York, police said.

There was no immediate word from United officials.
