Romania Shuts Nuclear Plant On Loading Failure

BUCHAREST, Jul 30, 2000 -- (Reuters) Romania shut down its only nuclear power plant after discovering a fault with its fuel loading equipment, officials said on Saturday.

A statement from the state-owned Cernavoda plant, said an "internal problem" occurred at one of the loading devices at the end of the loading process late on Friday.

Industry Minister Traian Berceanu told Reuters at a business seminar that Romania had notified the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna about the incident.

"The problem poses no nuclear risk and will be remedied in five to six days," Berceanu said.

The reactor, located on the banks of the Danube river, east of Bucharest provides some 13 percent of Romania's electricity output
