hanging a gate

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

i need to gate across my driveway,it is a total of 204 in. each side is 102 in long, i made a twig/ stick contsucted gate to keep lookers out does not realy need to keep anything in. ok problem when i mount it to the post it fails in the middle so i was going to use a guide wire mounted to the post running to the end of gate, one on each side, how do i figure the height of the post to create the proper pull of the guide? i hope this makes sense. i tried it mounted at 5ft and it wont hang right. thank you

Hi Renee, I just looked in the book, Frences For Pasture and Garden by Gail Damerow. It shows a gate with a guy wire but doesn't give measurements. The hinge post appears to be about half the gate's length above the hight of the gate (hope that makes sense) But the cable has a turnbuckle in it so that you can adjust the tension. So you just keep tightening until the gate is lifted enough.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes, Pauline

Ps. Have you managed to do any more research on the history of your house?

Huh, can't saw I've ever thought about how high to make the guy wire post. Off hand I'm thinking the post should be a little higher than twice the height of the gate. Does the gate have diagonal bracing in it to help firm it up? The guy wired gates I'm dredging up in my mind seem like the guy wire ran to the middle or less rather than to the far end. Maybe your county extension agent or farm supply store folks can help. Gerbil

if all else fails put a small wheel on the end of the gate. gail
