Photo ops at Great Swamp NWR

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Ask Bob : One Thread

Bob, your web site has a nice B&W photo of the Great Swamp. Where in NJ is this place , how do you get there by car and is it worth a visit considering the photographic opportunities there. I live in NYC area. Thanks.

If you search the nature Q&A froum you might dig up some info.

The GSNWR is about 30 miles due east of NYC and about 5 miles south or Morristown NJ. It should be marked on most maps. You can take I78 west and head north around exit 40.

Is it worth a visit? Strictly from a nature photography viewpoint, probably not. You don't see a lot of wildlife, at least not close enough to photograph. You can get lucky, but it's the exception rather than the rule. It's not really very scenic either, unless you like swamps. The western half is managed with a couple of boardwalks and the eastern half is "wild" and has several trails.
