Young PorkyPine. Now what?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We just found a very young porkypine that seems in shock. We gave him lettuce leaves and small pieces of apple and he is eating some. Anyone to give us some advice in how to take care of this little thing?

Hi, M. Franklin Santos! Welcome to our and your forum! I work with a wildlife rehabilitator here in Connecticut, USA, and have a book that touches on the needs of porcupines (didn't know there were any in Europe!). If the porky is weaned, and you can access a feed or pet store, there should be something available called rodent block, a type of feed for guinuea pigs and such. Also, provide for the youngster hay, carrots, other root veggies, evergreen branches and other plant material. Branches are vital, because rodents' teeth grow constantly and they need to grind them down while they feed. Oh, and fresh water should always be available. I would also suggest that you should find a wildlife rehabilitator or a zoo in your area as soon as possible. This is a wild animal, and those spines are very dangerous. Good luck to you and the little porky!!! Judi

I'm like Kirk Davis. Don't know anything about porcupines but it's really neat to get a post from Portugal-Europe. Eagle

I strongly suspect we have a confusion of terms here. To the best of my knowledge, there are no porcupines (in the North American sense) in Europe, and what is being discussed is a hedgehog. If so, do a search for "hedgehog" information with any of the search engines; or alternatively just phone a zoo or a vet. I suspect your little friend will be happy to solve any snail and slater (woodlouse) problems you may have, if not now then later.

Hi, Don I just wanted to inform you that this is a porcupine, not a hedgehog, I do know the difference and yes there are many here in Portugal.thanks
