Seeking TO HELP on homestead

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hi Everyone!

Thanks for all your answers to my previous posts about how to make a living in the country. They really helped! My plan at present is to move to the Ohio Valley and finish my college degree in theology and music. So although it looks like I won't be able to fully homestead for a while, at least I will be building equity in a small home, getting back into some small scale gardening, and continuing to read countryside.

I have two questions, I'm putting on a separate posting so as to not confuse the two.

The purpose of this post is to kind of follow up on a suggestion that was made a few weeks ago. I had mentioned about my interest in the Amish, and some had suggested that I approach the Amish about being a hired hand. I couldn't do it on a full time basis at this time until some personal trials come to an end, HOWEVER, I was wondering if my family (myself and 2 small children) could find another homesteading family in Indiana to correspond with, and help out every other weekend. I realize that I sorely lack many of the skills homesteaders have that are needed. I am seeking no monetary compensation, just time to get away from the city and be with others who are making it on their homestead so that I might in turn learn these skills (and maybe be helpful to someone else). I live on the NW side of Indianapolis, and plan on being here apx 6 months longer before relocating.

Any responses would be appreciated! THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

Chris

Wow what a great Idea, I have read in countryside that people cant find any one to help on their homestead. I bet you can find one that will help you learn. And it will be a lot off fun. Good luck to you, you will get there someday. I worked 7 days a week for 4 years to put my husband through school so that I could have my homstead. I have it know it was worth all the work!!!! Lisa
