Le Deserteur

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Boris Vian : One Thread

When was Le Deserteur written? When was it banned in France? Does there exist a list of recorded versions of this song? A LP/CD? Has anything been written on the history of Le Deserteur? Thanks for any answers!

"[Boris] Vian is still famous for his pacifist song, Le Deserteur, which was written as a protest against the French war in Algeria, and which sold thousands of copies in France before it was banned." From: http://www.senseofurgency.org/schmurz.html, a one-page bio of Boris Vian. I don't know about a list of recorded versions of it. What I have heard is a recording of it on an album of Peter, Paul, and Mary.

At http://www.kirjasto.sci.fi/bvian.htm the date given for Le Deserteur is 1955.

I have a copy on vinyl by Serge Reggiani, on the Jacques Canetti label. The disc appears to be called simply Album No 2, Bobino.

This song is as relevant now as it was when written. I sing a version translated by (I think) Leon Rosellson.
