What is your favorite holiday....and why?--Al

My favorite holiday used to be Thanksgiving. My mother-in-law has a condo at Lake Tahoe. It sits empty most of the year, but for Thanksgiving, the whole family (Walt me, all the kids, 2 grandmothers, Walt's sister, his brother & wife, his cousin & wife and any foreign students we had hanging around) would come from wherever in the country they were. Since nobody lives there, nobody had to worry about cleaning up. My mother-in-law cooked the turkey and the rest of us took care of the rest of the meal. Son Tom has been making baked alaska for dessert since he was about 13. I bring pumpkin pies--but nobody eats them for dessert; those are for a pre-breakfast snack the next day (we all spend the weekend together).

After dinner there are games. For years, we played charades--from youngest to oldest. Never laughed so much as watching the 80 year old grandma trying to pantomime some of the crazy titles the kids could think up.

Thanksgiving the year after David died was very hard. By the third Thanksgiving following his death, the tears didn't come as readily and we could laugh and have a good time, with a twinge of sadness that we were no longer *all* together.

Last year, after Paul died, I told the family that I simply couldn't do Lake Tahoe that year. We did something completely different and it was OK. It wasn't "Thanksgiving" as we have known it, but it was OK.

Holidays are now things I dread like the plague. I try not to bring everyone down, but for me, holidays are for families. And with two integral parts of our family gone I'm in the process of reinventing holidays for myself and it's going to take a long time before I can really head into holiday season without a heavy heart and loaded with dread.

Halloween is my favorite by far, always has been and probably always will be. Why? Because I get to dress up in any crazy outfit and nobody thinks I'm odd. I can be someone else for a day, or my wildest self, that person I keep hidden most of the time. Also it isn't loaded with a thousand expectations like Thanksgiving and Christmas and I don't have to buy presents, send out cards or cook for it. Yeah!

Halloween is the most fun when your a teacher, because you get to dress up with the kids and have fun with them. Then try to control them as they get on a major suger buzz.

In college St. Patricks day was fun, because I live across the street from a bar that opens up at 5 a.m. that day to sell green beer to college students. I think beer tastes about as good as bleach, and could never drink that early anyway, but it was fun going to classes with tipsy sorority guys, and seeing the professor still try to teach....
