KLM Jumbo Makes Emergency Landing in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Boeing 747 carrying 449 people that took off from Los Angeles airport on Sunday returned to make a safe emergency landing after losing an engine cowling, an airport spokeswoman said.

She said the pilot of Flight 602 noticed shortly after take off that debris, including the cowling, was falling from the third engine.

He dumped fuel before returning to the airport and the plane was in the air for about an hour and 20 minutes, the spokeswoman said.
