Glitch releases college 'ranks' early

Like actors learning who'll win the Academy Awards a week before Oscar night, many Northeast colleges got a surprise peek this week at the latest US News & World Report college rankings, after they accidentally went on sale a few days early.

The 2001 list, a copy of which was obtained by the Globe, named Princeton University as the nation's number one school. Harvard University and Yale University tied for second, followed by the California Institute of Technology - which was last year's top school - and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

A mix-up among shipping distributors led bookstores and supermarkets in Ohio, Vermont, and other states in the region to put the rankings guidebook on their shelves before the Sept. 4 sell date.
