I did not know that it was bad. Potatoes like tomatoes are both in the night sahde family and the leaves are posion buy I have never heard that you could not compost then.

I don't think so. My chicken are pecking in my garden now. Eating leftover tomatoes but leaving the leaves alone, Maybe they'er not as dumb as they look

Keith: The only thing I have seen mentioned in the books I have, is that by composting the leaves, if you don't have a hot compost pile, you may not kill any disease or insects on the plants, such as blight, or potato beetles. I've composted mine, tho, without any problems so far. Jan

i highly reccomend (personal experience) that you don"t plant your tomatoes next to your potatoes. not only do they exchange eachother's charicteristics but they become toxic! yes! you can compost both potaoes (& greens) and tomatoes w/great results. keep the compost "happy" and you will love the results. also, never plant tobacco of any kind near tomatoes or potatoes, it is as well a "nightshade" relative. poisionings have resulted! no kidding!! one thing that seems to help curb the cross-polination of nightshade variaties is the planting of basil, rosemary or sage among the plants. it works, i don't know why!? i'm no guru though, best-o-luck.
