Computer Power Outage Delays Continental Planes

Reuters Company News - September 12, 2000 21:13

HOUSTON, Sept 12 (Reuters) - A computer power outage kept dozens of Continental Airlines Inc. airplanes grounded for about 90 minutes on Tuesday, a company official said.

A burned out switch component interrupted the power supply to computers at Continental's Houston headquarters at about 6:00 p.m. CST (2300 GMT), said company spokesman Ned Walker.

The power outage at Continental's systems operation control centre halted the transfer of flight information to airports, prompting the airline to postpone all departures.

Power was restored and the computers rebooted around 7:30 p.m. CST (0030 GMT), allowing the airline to resume normal operations. Several dozen flights were delayed in the United States and other countries because of the problem, Walker said.
