NY:Eleven Overcome By Dimethoate Fumes at Lawn and Garden Treatment Product Company

Friday, September 15, 2000 - 5:47 PM ----- The overcome workers were heating dimethoate, which is usually heated to about 150 degrees. In this incident it was heated to almost 220 degrees.

The 11 workers taken to the hospital were treated for exposure and released. Seven St. Luke's-Memorial hospital employees who treated the workers were also treated for exposure.

New York Mills Fire Chief Ronald Roman said the Material Safety Data Sheet says overexposure to dimethoate can cause muscle spasms, nausea and headaches.

Several local police departments used patrol cars to broadcast warnings to neighborhood residents to go inside their homes, close their windows and wait for the odor to fade.

New York Mills is 43 miles east of Syracuse.
