Removing the meat from Black Walnuts

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

This year has been a great year for nuts. I have a very large crop of Black Walnuts and have been struggling to get the good stuff. I have a mechanical nut cracker but the meats don't come out without digging for them. I would like to know if anyone has a method of cracking the nuts so the meats can be removed more easily and if thiere are any known methods of removing the meats without breaking them into tiny pieces. Any help would be appreciated.

Ron: I have read that if you freeze them first, they come out easier. I have tried this with Brazil nuts, and it works on them. Good luck. Jan

Ronald, found a nifty little wooden cracker at a craft fair years ago-no name on it,just something you find at craft fairs, spring loaded.works great one at a time. you can practice till you find the one spot to hit kinda toward the back on the big end 90 degrees from the seam, shell comes apart in 3 big pieces--but Ill admit that I'd starve to death if i had to crack enuff walnuts to live on.Good luck
