The New England Council and Congressional Leaders to Meet With U.S. Energy Secretary as Heating Oil Concerns Rise Business Wire - September 19, 2000 14:19

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 19, 2000--Concerned with the price and availability of home heating oil and natural gas supplies as the 2000-2001 winter heating season approaches, The New England Council will convene a meeting in Washington, D.C. September 20 with U.S. Secretary of Energy William Richardson and the New England Congressional Caucus.

The Caucus will also hear from national and regional energy leaders to explore ways in which business and residential consumers can prepare for the season.

"The energy crisis affects everyone in the region, from expanding high-tech companies, who need virtually uninterrupted power, to the small manufacturing plant pouring its profits into fuel tanks to local governments that find their heating bills doubled forcing a cutback in services, to the neediest of residential consumers," said James T. Brett, President and CEO, The New England Council. "With additional price increases estimated to be 25% for home heating oil and 30% for natural gas during the peak winter months, action must be taken to address the crisis with cooperation between both the public and private sectors."

In order to address the growing regional energy crisis for both the long and short-term, The New England Council is advocating several actions by federal and state lawmakers.

In a recent meeting in Boston, The New England Council joined the New England Governor's Conference and state officials from each New England state to discuss statewide efforts to mitigate the problem.

The New England Council is the nation's oldest regional business organization. The New England Congressional Caucus is co-chaired by U.S. Representative Richard Neal (MA) and U.S. Representative Charles Bass (NH).
