Alabama: Plane with 147 Makes Emergency Landing Following Cockpit Fire--Crew Member Burned

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) An electrical fire in the cockpit of a Continental Airlines jet headed to Dallas forced the crew to make an emergency landing at Birmingham International Airport, an airline spokeswoman said.

A crew member sitting behind the pilot on Flight 1579 from Atlanta suffered minor burns, spokeswoman Erica Roy said. There were no other injuries, she said, and the fire was out when the McDonnell Douglas DC-9 carrying 147 passengers and crew landed at about 5 p.m. Sunday.
