NY: Nine Mile 1 plant in cold shutdown--unusual event declared By Associated Press, 10/2/2000 18:47

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) The Nine Mile Point 1 nuclear power plant on Lake Ontario remained in cold shutdown Monday after an ''unusual event'' was declared, Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. officials said.

An unplanned opening of a relief valve forced operators to manually shut down the plant at 7:12 a.m. Monday. No radiation was released, Niagara Mohawk said.

The opening of the valve led to increased water levels in the plant's drywell, a structure surrounding the reactor that's designed to collect water discharged from the reactor, utility officials said.

The plant was returning to service after a maintenance outage when the unusual event was declared.

An unusual event is the lowest of four categories outlined by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Niagara Mohawk owns the 609-megawatt plant, which is located in Scriba, N.Y., about 40 miles north of Syracuse.
