Definitely go with a USB interface for downloading pics to PC. Definitely purchase as much resolution as possible. The Sony products use a floppy for storage...sounds good at first but these days with high resolutions a 1.44Mb floppy doesn't provide the necessary storage capacity. Also, the resolution is crappy on the Sony's until you get into the $700+ range. 640 x 480 just doesn't cut it, IMO. No bang for the buck.

I use a Kodak DC240. Excellent camera. Mega-pixel, USB, optical zoom, menus are easy to figure out. Should be available under $500. Get yourself a 32Mb flash memory card for the camera, which runs about $70. I believe an 8Mb card comes with it.

UPDATE: buy.com offers the Kodak DC240 for $379!

WARNING: this camera eats batteries like cpr eats storage space on Greenspun's server.
