Newsweek: Israeli Army Will Reoccupy West Bank and Gaza if Arafat Does Not End Violence; 'Lowest Moment Since Oslo,' Says Top Palestinian

Aides Now Think Barak Concessions on Jerusalem Were 'Playing With Fire'

NEW YORK, Oct. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The Israeli Army will reoccupy the 40 percent of the West Bank partially controlled by Palestinian leader Yasir Arafat and take over the Gaza Strip, as well as possibly shutting down Arafat's only airport, unless he makes progress toward putting an end to the violence, report Jerusalem Bureau Chief Daniel Klaidman and Chief Diplomatic Correspondent Michael Hirsh in the October 16 issue (on newsstands Monday, October 9). One Israeli paratrooper tells Newsweek that any military sites will be "hit by us mercilessly." (Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20001007/HSSA007 )

With the violence widening to frightening dimensions over the weekend and Hizbullah guerrillas taking three Israeli soldiers hostage, chief Palestinian negotiator Abu Ala tells Newsweek: "This is the lowest moment since Oslo," referring to the initial peace deal struck in 1993 between Israel and the Palestinians.

Meanwhile, some of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak's ministers have criticized his negotiating tactics, report Klaidman and Hirsh. The ministers suggest that Barak's willingness to concede some parts of East Jerusalem at Camp David may have raised unrealistic expectations among the Palestinians. As one minister put it, Barak "was playing with fire."

Once the Isralis do this anything can happen. All bets on peace are off.

Clinton's hope of a Nobel Peace Prize is up in smoke.

Could anything worse happen?

Oh, yes -- I just remembered -- we could also have a stock market crash and a worldwide depression.
