Russia: Gas Explosion Destroys Five Story Apartment Building, Killing Three

THE MOSCOW TIMES

MOSCOW -- An explosion blamed on a gas leak ripped apart an apartment building in Barnaul, the capital of Altai, killing three people and leaving five hospitalized, news agencies reported.

Televised news reports showed footage of a gaping hole in the top floors of the five-story building. Three apartments were completely destroyed and 13 others suffered serious damage, Interfax reported.

Several dozen residents of the building were being temporarily housed in two local hotels, Itar-Tass reported.

The regional government has pledged to pay up to 10 million rubles ($359,000) in compensation to those whose apartments were damaged or destroyed, Interfax reported
