10/13 02:32 Cathay Pacific Airways Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Taipei By Joshua Fellman

Hong Kong, Oct. 13 (Bloomberg) -- A Cathay Pacific Airways plane made an emergency landing in Taipei after the pilot smelled a burning odor in the cockpit, the airline said in a statement.

Cathay flight CX410, using an Airbus Industrie A340-300 aircraft, was flying to Seoul from Hong Kong with 99 passengers and 14 crew on board. It landed safely at 11:24 p.m. and no fire was found.

``The smell was later identified as coming from a minor defect with a light dimmer,'' the statement said. ``None of the passengers or crew suffered any ill effects from the smell.''

The airline said it put another aircraft into service to fly the passengers to Seoul, where they arrived three hours late. Technicians disabled the dimmer control unit, which the airline will replace when the aircraft returns to Hong Kong.

Cathay Pacific grounded its entire Airbus A330 fleet in 1997 after their Rolls Royce Trent engines developed gearbox problems that caused them to shut down in flight. The airline hasn't had a fatal accident since 1972.

Cathay shares fell as much as 6.2 percent to HK$1.20, following Asian rivals lower as the price crude oil surged.
