Fire Breaks Out at U.S. Embassy in Moscow, Extinguished The Associated Press

MOSCOW (AP) - A fire broke out in a building at the U.S. Embassy compound in Moscow on Friday night and was extinguished by embassy personnel, officials and witnesses said. The city fire department received a report of the fire shortly before midnight, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported. A Russian security guard outside the compound confirmed that Moscow city fire-fighters had arrived at the scene, but U.S. Marines put out the fire on their own.

In Washington, State Department spokesman Philip Reeker said that it was an electrical fire. No casualties were reported.

The building had been unveiled in May, 15 years after its construction was halted because Soviet builders had left it riddled with listening devices. Construction on the building, which was to have been a replacement for the old, crowded embassy building on Moscow's Garden Ring Road, had been stopped in 1985, but it was refurbished and opened for non-classified operations.
