The untimely death of Johnny Roe Hoe. [true story]

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

He came to live at my house first. A handsome yet old battle scarred dude that knew his way around in this old wicked world. He still held his head high after bein picked on for most of his adult life. He just didn't fit in at my house-no, I wasn't mean to'm or snything-so I carried'm over to jeeps house. He immediately liked it over there and so I told ole jeep--"you have another mouth to feed now"! He didn't seem to care -so we just left things the way they were and I came on home. I didn't ask'm about Johnny anymore-didn't go have a look see for myself and it was most of a month before I thought about it again. I finally went over and while there just came out and asked ole jeep where was Johnny and how was he doin. He dropped some terrible news to me then, said he didn't really know how to tell me but Johnny hadn't stayed but about a week. Jeep took'm over to a cousin of ours and let him out there. Figgered Johnny could sleep in the horse barn and ole Roy wouldn't find out--well, real quick that is. It didn't bother me very much or as much as jeep thought. Johnny was "cock of the walk" and nobody took advantage of him--He'd see to that himself! Jeeep said he was talkin to ole Roy couple days before I ask'm about Johnny. Roy had told ole jeep that somebody had delivered Johnny Roe Hoe to his house and he didn't really know who did it. Said that was the toughest Leghorn Rooster he'd EVER tried to eat!!!! Jeep has some fake hens around his'n yard, you know the painted up ones-and ole Johnny was attemptin to "intermingle" with some of'm. At one point the concrete [?] hen fell over and ole Johnny took a tumble, jumped back up and kinda turned his head sideways alookin at the hen. I would've give a nickel to known what he was thinkin! True story and not embellished any---really! Who says countryfolks don't have fun. Be good to your neighbors and their CHICKENS! MATT. 24:44
