Burst Tire Closes Nairobi

Oct 20, 2000

Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta airport was closed Thursday after a Kenya Airways jet had to abort take-off because of a burst tire.

The Boeing 737-200, carrying 35 passengers on a flight to Uganda, veered off the runway, but no one was hurt. Flights into Nairobi were diverted to Kisumu and Mombasa airports.

Reports in the African newspaper The Nation say this was the third incident involving Kenya Airways planes in the last few weeks.

In a statement the airline said: "The captain and his first officer adopted normal procedural measures and successfully discontinued the flight. The aircraft stopped within the allowed distance without blocking the runway."

Passengers were disembarked from the aircraft and taken by bus to the terminal. http://news.airwise.com/stories/2000/10/972049209.html
