Scrapheap unplugged - The Wooden Challenge

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Scrapheap : One Thread

How about a scrapheap using nothing except wood. The teams would need to build something good, however all they could use is wood, screws n glue.

What do you think...?

thx for the show, been a big fan from the start.

I think this is a great idea. I love very low tech solutions to difficult problems.

I'd like to see some sort of low-tech communications device. One team member must somehow transmit a message or image to another team member some distance away and out of sight and hearing range. Anyone remember "The Secret Life of Machines" (what a great show that was) episode in which they demonstrated primitive mechanical fax machines?

With only 10 hours build time, you don't have time for glue.

Glue is for weaklings, wots wrong with nails and screws

Use wooden welding rods, and weld it togather. I also thought "The Secret Lives of Machines" was one of the best shows going. Even "Acoustic Alchemy's" version of "Take Five" was great for the theme song.

An "All-Wood" challenge would be neat to see..especially for kids who love the show. We have to tape the shows for our kids, but they don't know much about welding etc., so a more "primative" challenge would be something they could relate to better.

whats the point in doin it in wood only wen u dnt normally go to a scrap yard and find wood only, theres no point in it at all. what u goin to think of next a scrap heap challenge with out the scrap. i mean come on get a life u computergeak.

You have 10 hours build time, but you don't have to operate the thing until the next day. Just enough time for glue to set up. Epoxy would be usable in a few minutes and fully cured in a couple of hours.

First challenge: Wooden internal combustion engine.

I hope you where joking about the wooden IC engine. Wood Burns! Actually, I'm facinated by the concept of using wood. It'd be expensive, though because wood is a lot more expensive than scrap steel. You'd need a pile of it, and a whole set of new tools. Still it intrigues me.
