Quick & simple saddle horse

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

My 12 year old son just built the greatest saddle holders! We were terrible about leaving our tack lying around. Then, the other day I set a saddle on top of an old mail box that was on the ground nearby. Perfect fit! My son figured out a way to attach the mailbox to the wall of the barn (he used a piece of wood post between the bottom of the mailbox & the ground, to hold the front up). The saddle sits nicley atop the mailbox, and you can store the bridle (or whatever else) inside. We used big old dented metal mailboxes, which we'll paint. I don't think the small-sized boxes would work as well.

Shannon, what a nifty idea. I'd like to give you another one. We always had rats/mice in our barns and after getting the trim chewed off of my saddle while it was sitting on a saddle rack I came up with a better idea. Take a piece of rope and tie it to a rafter and put a slip knot in the other end. Put the end with the slip knot over the saddle horn so that your saddle is hanging. Just make sure the styrups aren't touching the floor and rats can't get to it. I would hang my saddle blanket and bridle on the saddle.
