Speculations solicited--what do you think will become of Clinton after he leaves office?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TB2K spinoff uncensored : One Thread

OK, I'll start. I predict the following, regardless of who wins the Presidency:

First, Hillary will divorce him, whether or not she wins her own election. Second, he will not return to Arkansas. What politician ever goes home after having an extended stay in DC? Third, he will be irrelevant. All ex-Presidents are irrelevant (Carter might be an exception--he actually became MORE relevant after leaving office) but Clinton will be the youngest irrelevant ex-President ever.

I predict he will accept a well-paid figurehead position, chase a few more skirts, write a never-read book and die an early death---alone, scorned and mocked.

I could be wrong---maybe Letterman will hire him to do silent walk-ons after Larry Bud dies.

Lars:

My prediction is that Hillary will win the Senate seat in NY and Bill will move to NY to live with her, possibly even starting a law practice there. I don't see a divorce in the picture. That's MY psychic prediction on this one. Since I also predicted a Gore win, I'll go so far as to suggest that Al may solicit Bill for advise on foreign affairs.

As I asked Buster [on another thread]...is there a prize for who wins?

-- Anita (Anita_S3@hotmail.com), October 27, 2000.

My prediction is that Clinton is too smart and too close to the centers of power to be left in the cold. He will get a large number of cushy jobs that pay him for the prestige of his name, such as a law firm partnership in some big name law office in NY, memberships on corporate boards of directors, maybe a chair at a university, if he so desires. he will give speeches for big fees (he is good at public speaking) and live a life of ease and wealth.

Since his is, as Peter pointed out, irrelevant in some sense, the scrutiny he receives from the press will drop off to insignifigant levels. He will be able to relax and be naughty in relative privacy, compared to the aquarium of the White House.

A steady trickle of scandal-selling muckraking expose' kinds of books will appear about him, maybe once every 5-8 years until the public stops buying them - which may be a long time from now. He will be treated as a dimmed, but intriguing celebrity - like Sinatra was after the 70s. Not a star. Not a washout. Just always there.

Anita--

Interesting answer. For several years I have taken it as a given that she would divorce him immediately after his abdication. Didn't look to me like there was much love there and he did publically humiliate her (didn't he?). I would never suggest anything so cynical as that she was hanging in because it suited her own ambitions to be married to a President.

Yes, a prize. Well, it will take several years to see whose predictions are most accurate. If we are all still here in 2002, I propose that the winner be awarded a free week in Hope, AR. The runner-up will receive two weeks in Hope, AR.

-- Lars (lars@indy.net), October 27, 2000.

Brian--

Another interesting answer. I don't rule it out---he has always landed on his feet.

I like the comparison to Sinatra. I can imagine Clinton in 20 years singing "My Way" in Branson, MO.

Do you think they will stay married?

-- Lars (lars@indy.net), October 27, 2000.

Lars:

No disagreements with your predictions. I would add that he's going to be disbarred as well.

-- Jim Cooke (JJCooke@yahoo.com), October 27, 2000.

Jim--

When you win, you will receive two roundtrip Greyhound tickets to Hope, AR and a week's free accomodations at Billy Bob's Motel and Go-Cart Resort. Bring your own bath towels. Enjoy!

He will be appointed President for life of the NWO. Then be assassinated when his term is up.

-- Porky (Porky@in.cellblockD), October 27, 2000.

Lars,

Why would she divorce him, so she can remarry?

Magic 8 ball say 'No Divorce'.

{Notice negative phrasing - opposite of 'Yes Marriage'}

My prediction is that Bill will have his own special version of the 'carpeted garage' that David wrote of on the Sasquatch thread.

-- flora (***@__._), October 27, 2000.

Klintooooooon will declare Marshall Law to stop all the looting and rioting that resulted from massive Y2K problems. He will then declare himself President For Life and march all of us into the American Death Camps. It's true. I read it on NewsMax.

-- flora (***@__._), October 27, 2000.

He's going to get a motorcycle, and go looking for Loowla. Bill's convinced he can help with that 'fullness of being' situation.

Destined to be devoted to detente.

-- flora (***@__._), October 27, 2000.

Lars, thanks for this topic! I love making predictions.

Anita and Brian, a law firm would hire him without a license to practice law? I guess for the name, they would. I don't see him doing law, just giving speeches. I see him doing skits with his newly found friends in Hollywood. The reference to Sinatra was pretty accurate.

Lars, I guess I'll take it a little further than you. I do believe that Hillary views hers as a marriage of convenience. She's only with him for the benefits of her access to public office. She will divorce him for there is no love lost between them. It may not be soon but I'll bet that after his next "bimbo erruption" and his frequent trips to Hollywood, she'll give him the boot.

Lars,

If Gore wins, an indictment for perjury, followed by a pardon.

If Bush wins, an indictment for perjury, followed by a conviction, followed by a short stay in one of those country club prisons.

William Jefferson Clinton's legacy: the only American president to be incarcerated for crimes committed while in office.

-- J (Y2J@home.comm), October 27, 2000.

>> Do you think they will stay married? <<

Oh, man! That is such an intimate question I know I really can't touch the truth of it. As a parlor game, though, I would say that so long as either of them is in office (meaning, if Hillary is a senator) that they will remain married in the public eye. In private, I couln't say.

My guess is that it wouldn't take more than two years of private life together to lead to a divorce. But as I said, what goes on in a relationship between a husband and wife is completely unknowable to an outsider. They could reconcile. I suspect that would be really painful for both of them.

-- Brian McLaughlin (brianm@ims.com), October 27, 2000.

King Klinton will be killed while in office, either en route or from ME peace talks or some trip out of the country. Prince Gore will immediately take over. Martial law may or may not follw.

-- (you@don't.know), October 27, 2000.

Slick Willy will open a cigar stand in New York's garment district.

-- (nemesis@awol.com), October 27, 2000.

Lars,

HST returned home after a stay in DC. So did DDE (though home was a farm in Gettysburg and not Kansas). Nixon sort of did. First going to NJ and then CA. Carter went back to the family farm and RR back to CA but he did sell his ranch. Given his condition he would have had to. And Bush the Elder went back to Texas and still has the home in Maine.

As for Bill: HeBll go to NY but will spend less and less time there. As for him and Hill it depends on if he still plays around and how public it gets. My guess it would be yes in both cases though not right away. SheBll divorce him if it becomes very public and the other is a very young 20 something, HeBll always have his fans and entourage but I think the public as a whole will get tired of him as an ex-president very quickly. If there is a recession on the horizon and it turns out to be a bad one (assuming Gore is elected) itBll be interesting to see how much BcreditB Al and Bill will get for it. Remember people like his policies (i.e. the good economy) not him personally. If the economy had been in the tank he would have never survived impeachment. If Gore is elected (and especially if Bush has a large or larger popular vote) and the economy tanks blaming it on RR and Bush the Elder wonBt work since they have been claiming credit for the last 8 years.

-- The Engineer (spcengineer@yahoo.com), October 27, 2000.

Injuneer,

Yes, as soon as I had written that, I realized that most ex-presidents had not stayed in DC altho most did not go back to their humble origins either. To their credit, HST and Carter went home. Carter especially impresses me as an ex-Pres. Rosalyn too, Hillary could take some class-act lessons from her.

There is an an fun new scenario floating about. No doubt it is of Dem origin. The idea is that Bush wins his election and Hillary wins hers. Bush will prove to be a weak President and the smartest-woman-on-Earth will prove to be a strong Senator. Thus setting the stage for a Hillary-Dubya showdown in 2004.

-- Lars (lars@indy.net), October 27, 2000.

I predict he will play a lot of golf with OJ.

-- Uncle Deedah (unkeed@yahoo.com), October 27, 2000.

Lars,

I think that we have been in a fairly quiescent time. Bill is a lucky man in a lot of ways and sometimes itBs better to be luck then smart, though he ainBt dumb either. Not as smart as a lot of people think but not dumb. If the Republicans hadnBt taken over Congress and deadlock hadnBt happened I think that there wouldnBt have been a surplus or such a long bull market.

The bull market is coming to and end no matter who wins. In some ways itBll be worse for Bush because the good times will be associated with Bill and Al. But I think his polices would make the recession short and not so steep. If Gore actually tries to carry out his agenda (and gets a Democratic Congress) then the recession will be longer and deeper then under Bush. Gore will also get us involved in a lot of military commitments overseas. Bush wonBt. HeBll take a lot of heat for it from the media but itBs the wiser policy (in my opinion, of course). Both of them run a good chance of being one term wonders but itBs higher for Gore then Bush.

As for Hillary. I think she will be the Senator who is always on TV, and gives a lot of speeches. SheBll try to be a policy wonk and will also do a lot of traveling around the world. Personally I think sheBll take the voters for granted and theyBll throw her out after one term.

Unc,

I thought Monica was going to get together with OJ.

He'll be appointed a supreme court justice no matter who's elected because he is not qualified to flip burgers.

-- Doris (reaper@pacifier.com), October 27, 2000.

J (Y2J@home.comm),

If Gore wins, he wouldn't dare pardon Clinton for anything. Such a pardon would be one of the surest ways of guaranteeing that Gore would not be reelected, not to mention stirring up the whole mess again which wouldn't help Gore in any way.

-- No Spam Please (nos_pam_please@hotmail.com), October 27, 2000.

No Spam Please,

If you are correct, then Billy Boy may be looking at jail time no matter who wins the election.

-- J (Y2J@home.comm), October 27, 2000.

Clinton wants to leave a legacy. He has been one lucky Bubba during his Presidency---nothing has gone horribly wrong. But neither has anything gone amazingly. His ambitions for total power remain unfulfilled.

I am privvy to esoteric knowledge that Clinton will soon make major Machiavellian moves. Initially, these will be innocuous. He will raise billions from the Hollywood Left to create a Clinton Library on the banks of Big Shanky Creek in Hope, AR. But this will be a front. Altho divorced, Billary will remain a vital power base with Senator Hillary (backed by the shadowy Thighmaster Corp) on the inside and the siver-haired Elder Statesman on the outside. They plan to recruit a private army of disaffected youths and infected yoots. Their shock troops will be chubby young white women of low self-esteem. Bill already knows many of them.

Hillary will surprise everyone by adapting a mascara-stragegy in which she emulates Tammy Faye Baker. There are millions of women, former Tammy Faye devotees, that have been empty and frustrated for over ten years. Hillary intends to mobilize the passion of this seething polyestrus.

Billary is certain that at just the right time, the corrupt US will fall like a ripe fruitloop into their pudgy fingers.

-- (Paracelsus@Pb.Au), October 29, 2000.

J,

Yes, that's the proper legal way to handle it.

I think the Congressional Republicans damaged our checks-and-balances system by impeaching a President for a constitutionally unimportant crime.

Prosecuting Clinton after his term ends would help restore proper perspective by showing how his perjury in the Jones case should have been handled all along and setting an example for the future. After all, if he becomes the only President to be convicted and sentenced to a prison term, *that* would send a strong message to future Presidents.
