N.Y.C. MetroCard machines crash - Standard Time glitch

NEW YORK -- Virtually all of the 1,800 MetroCard
vending machines around the city went out of service
early Sunday, a spokesman for New York City Transit
said.

. . .

"We want to know why this happened," O'Leary said,
adding that the manufacturer of the machines had been
contacted to determine whether a software glitch was at
fault. O'Leary noted that the problem happened near the
hour when the East Coast returned to Eastern Standard
Time, but he said no such problem occurred with the
machines last year.

A telephone service interruption that occurred
approximately at the same time as the vending
machine shutdown is also being reviewed, said
the transit department spokesman.

"A switch in Hackensack, N.J. went down about
the same time." However, the agency isn't
certain which telephone carrier's line went out
of service.
