Palestinian Hardliner: Iran Will React If Israel Attacks Syria Or Lebanon November 01, 2000

Iran has told Syria it will react if Israel attacks Syria or Lebanon, a hardline Palestinian leader said Wednesday after meeting a visiting Iranian official. "The Iranians have informed Syria that they will not stand still in case of an Israeli attack against Syria or Lebanon," Ahmad Jibril, head of the militant Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command, told AFP. "The Iranians are looking to help the Palestinians in all ways and want to give concrete support to the Arab and Islamic nation," he said. Israel has said it holds Syria, the main powerbroker in Lebanon, responsible for tension on the Lebanese-Israeli border. Israel also accuses Syria of giving the green light to the Hezbollah movement, which is backed by both Tehran and Damascus, to capture three Israeli soldiers last month. Jibril was speaking after a meeting with Iranian Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Mohammad Sadr, who also met Tuesday with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and gave him a message from Iranian President Mohammad Khatami. Sadr will also meet in Damascus with other Palestinian movements violently opposed to the peace process, including Islamic Jihad in Palestine and the Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas. Sadr leaves Thursday for Lebanon. Separately, Jibril said he was hoping that a meeting of Organization of the Islamic Conference foreign ministers in Doha next week will be "better" than the recent Arab summit, which strongly denounced Israel for the violence in the Palestinian territories but stopped short of taking concrete action -- DAMASCUS (AFP)
