why does American fast food always taste so much better?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Gwen's Trailer Trash Forum : One Thread

Maybe its because I'm a londoner that I love London Town - but not the fast food. You yankee cousins may load your chocolate with wax but I'd swap an English Mars bar for one of your burgers (or should that be a royale with cheese?) anyday.

I think the burgers from McD's and Burger King taste the same, but McDonald's ketchup in the UK is just wrong. Way too sweet, an abomination.

Burger King and Dairy Queen Taste the same. McD's is rank. A&W (Albert and Walters with the rootbear mascot) are the best

There's Dairy Queen in the UK?! Please tell me where.

Jackie, do I need to bring you ketchup packets when I come over in May? :)

In Sydney last February we ate at McDonald's at least once. It was pretty much the same as here in the States. Interpret that how you want, because we didn't eat the burgers.

BTW, there was a special burger there with a nice big slice of red beet inside. Ugh. Apparently, Australians love beets on their burgers.

Grease. Low-quality grease is what it's all about. In the meat and in the deep-fat fryer.

That's why french fries don't taste as good anymore. The fast food places stopped using lard and went to vegetable oil.

Paul,

Call me a whinging pommie bastard, but I can't blame you for steering clear of the beet. Sounds more hideous than the dreaded gherkin.

At KFC in Palm Springs I got macaroni cheese which I haven't seen elsewhere - make of that what you will.......

Beets and pickles on burgers = Bad. So there.

You can always get Mac'n'Cheese (Mac and Queso?) at Boston Market, if you can find one that hasn't closed yet.

Yeah, I told the Beet Burger story to some Australians and they all agreed that it made sense, Australians love their red beets. I think it was called the "McAussie" or something else devilishly McClever like that. As a matter of fact, we did have veggie burgers one day in Penrith and after one bite had to pull those great big ol' beet-slabs out before we gagged. Turned the special sauce pink. Blech.

Lee, the mac & cheese thing is easily explained. KFC stands for Kentucky Fried Chicken, right? Well, in the South, mac & cheese is a vegetable.

During the Olympics, the McD's here were serving Bondi Beach Burgers and some boomerang-shaped mozzarella sticks.

We also get the occasional Indian McD's special sandwich. I forget what they were called, but I wouldn't eat them if you paid me.

Heh! I can't even begin to imagine what McD's would see fit to put in the Indian sandwich. I like the fact that in Maine they serve lobster rolls, which are not bad either. And I'm told that in Germany you can buy beer in McDonald's.

Does anyone remember the McRib sandwich? I think it was just pulverized pork that they then pressed into a shape that was supposed to resemble ribs. Ugh, nasty.

My dad used to love those McRibs. Chomp! (Remember on the commercial, how they said "Chomp!"?)

In Texas, McDonald's sells breakfast tacos. They don't call them McTacos or anything, though. They look pretty damned nasty. The picture shows eggs with tiny red and green squares among them. I've never seen one in real life.

-- Anonymous, November 07, 2000

Yuk, they probably want you to think the green and red squares are peppers. But we know better. I've never even eaten breakfast at McDonald's all that often but I stopped entirely when in the course of three months I got a bone chip in a Sausage McMuffin and a piece of eggshell in something else.

I think my mind has blocked out that McRib commercial for sanity's sake. I did hear from someone else that the sandwiches were pretty good-tasting, even if the appearance was vile.

I really like the McRib. I'd never have thought to put pickles on top of a barbecued pork sandwich, but then I guess that's why I'm not an innovator at McDonald's.

McD's Breakfast Burritos are awesome. When I was in Ohio last month, Karri's brother set his alarm for 6AM, went out, came back 20 minutes later and went to bed. When he woke up the second time that day, we asked him where he'd gone that early. 'I've been craving Breakfast Burritos,' he told us. I was so mad that he didn't bring one back for me. Heh.

And I think the Indian McD's sandwich are some kind of curried lamb.

It's against the law to offer barbecue without pickles down her. There's this place called Smoky J's where the chopped beef has pickle relish mixed in. It's very, very good if you're into that sort of thing.

They still sell McRibs. Or there's a REALLY old advert on a billboard near my house. :)

-- Anonymous, November 07, 2000

They seem to have brought back McRibs. I've seen quite a few ads for them lately.

-- Anonymous, November 07, 2000

At our local McDonald's I think they were back "for a limited time only."

-- Anonymous, November 07, 2000

do you oversea poeple have frankies fryed fish over there? its ssoooooo good!

-- Anonymous, November 08, 2000

When I first moved here, I was surprised to see KFC's combined with Taco Bell - I know PepsiCo owns them both, but it was weird. Another strange thing that STILL cracks me up is "Chinese Food & Donuts." Swear to god, a lot of "fast" Chinese restaurants also have full service donuts shops too... Hard to imagine Garlic Eggplant in Black Bean sauce and, say, a glazed crueller. .... ..

-- Anonymous, November 11, 2000

Marisa, I have one of those Chinese/Donut shops just a few minutes from where I work. haha...And KFC does have the most awesome mac and cheese. Yum. We also have a KFC/Taco bell here. McDonald's breakfast burritos---yum yum! They really are good.
