Roy Keane on Man U fans

From the BBC news site, even Roy Keane agrees with the rest of the world :
Manchester United captain Roy Keane has launched a scathing attack on some sections of the Old Trafford crowd. Keane was unhappy with the reaction from some fans during the 1-0 Champions League victory against Dynamo Kiev which was enough to send United into the second phase. I don't think some of the people who come to Old Trafford can spell football, never mind understand it Roy Keane The Irishman told BBC Radio that some fans did not understand football and need to "get into the real world". He said: "Sometimes you are going to have games like this but you just have to battle and that's what we did. At times the quality wasn't there, but hopefully that will come later on in the competition. "We did feel in control of the match. Fair enough, we didn't create that many chances but they didn't either until the last minute of the match. No understanding "Our fans away from home are as good as any, but some of them come here and you have to wonder do they understand the game of football? "We're 1-0 up, then there are one or two stray passes and they're getting on players' backs. It's just not on. "At the end of the day they need to get behind the team. Away from home our fans are fantastic, I'd call them the hardcore fans. "But at home they have a few drinks and probably the prawn sandwiches, and they don't realise what's going on out on the pitch," added Keane in a broadside at fans in the hospitality boxes. "I don't think some of the people who come to Old Trafford can spell football, never mind understand it. "To win games by three and four every time - these people need fantasy football. They need to get in the real world. "We need to improve because it is definitely going to get harder. It's up to the players to pull their fingers out, especially away from home." "I don't think we've reached anything like our peak yet and hopefully this first group phase will be a little bit of a kick up the backside for us. "We've got to go on from here and produce better performances. Last season, boss Sir Alex Ferguson asked for more noise from the crowd on European nights after admitting his disappointment at the lack of atmosphere at Old Trafford.

The best bit is "I don't think some of the people who come to Old Trafford can spell football, never mind understand it"

LR the ball is firmly in your court, personally my view on the match last night just concerns individuals, Wes Brown good, Irwin fine old trouper, Beckam has got to vary his game, Butt sound, Giggs magic, Sheringham astute, but Keano, Keano is half a yard short of the game and looks to me a weakness.

Buff...I've been arguing this point all over the net today and I keep coming back to the same conclusion.....Keane's outburst although slightly warranted should not have been made in public and IMHO only goes to cover his own inadequecies this season. In short, keano has been playing like a nag. I was there on Wednesday night and the atmosphere was good..very good at times. He's whinging cos the crowd were getting slightly anxious but what does he expect. Dicked by Anderlecht and PSV and only just hanging in there v's Kiev.

LR, I have had wee chat with old Jools about this and he thinks that Keane was justified. Personally, I think it's a disgrace. How much do you pay him to slag you off like that? Compare with the far less well- paid Warren Barton who was once, maybe to our shame, roundly booed at SJP and he has NEVER said a bad word about us -in fact loves us to bits. Or even with Alan Shearer who has said that the crowd should let you know if you're not doing the bizz (although in fairness, he is almost never on the receiving end except in very small pockets).

Not one to get into this crowd noise debate, I just know those long distant balmy Fairs Cups nights we were awesome, and tonight with Celtic losing 2-1 and requiring 2 goals with three mins to go their support was tremendous. I agree with your comments with Kean`s outburst and also its satisfying to know that a regular also sees thro the inadequacies in his game,Giggs in his present form is priceless.

I`m in two minds about his comments. I think it must be really disappointing to be working your butt off on the pitch and not having your efforts appreciated. They are not `superhuman`, and may not have played as well as they have been seen to do in the past, but all teams have phases like that and it doesn`t necessarily mean they weren`t trying.

On the other hand, I do feel that it is folly to lambast the `home` supporters like that, unfair to a good proportion of them, and pretty unprofessional to boot. I kind of get the feeling he might have just put his head in the hangman`s noose - woe bedtide him now if his form really drops off.

Douggie.....along with Jools and 99.9% of decent Reds, I also agree with the content...but I do NOT agree with the delivery. Match programs...one's read by said corporates and sandwich munchers is the place to let rip.

Saying that, we'll probably go beserk v's Boro on Saturday.....

Galaxy...this is my whole point....they were NOT working their butts of...haven't been doing so for weeks...MONTHS...and apart from that theye WERE being appreciated. We were better for LONG LONG periods of the game on Wed than we have been for ages.

You talk about Keane having put his head in the hangman's noose and I feel like being the hangman. I know that he'll get a rousing reception on Saturday but I'm afraid Keano, I'll reserve my cheers for anything you do directly relating to the football on the pitch...NOT just cos U are there (as if he's reading this) :-)

At least its got a reaction at last .... and LR whats all that Andy stuff ? You'll be calling yourself Andrew next ; - )

I confess that I only got to see bits of the game, so maybe I should have couched it in more general terms. If you`re certain they weren`t playing in top gear, I`ll take your word for it. Do you think that perhaps a team that has been so successful can become jaded?

-- Anonymous, November 10, 2000

No Galaxy I don't think our team should ever get jaded. The Wizard swops around too often for that. It's us..the fans that get complacent.

Fair comment LR.(:o)

It's all a bit sad this. You know we're all - including Roy Keane - dreaming of a far off time when football was fanatically supported by the majority of fans who went to games.
Sadly - like B#, shillings and pence, The Likely Lads, and even kipper ties - those days are long gone.
We now live in the age of all-seater stadia, the corporate sponsor, and that real horror of horrors, "the soccer spectator"! Bill Shankly and Joe Harvey would turn in their graves!
Hate to say it gang, but the occasions we're trying to recapture - like Buff's wonderful Fairs Cup nights in the late 60's when the SJP crowd were truly awesome - are long, long gone: better get used to it.

You're right, Clarky and I think that is why the away crowds are always so good - because they are the mad people who will travel to hideous, far off places, like Maine Road and Upton Park too see the lads.
