Review Whittles Bush's N.H. Lead (computer errors)

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) -- Proofreading and computer
errors whittled George W. Bush's margin of victory
in New Hampshire to 7,211, the secretary of state's
office said Monday.

. . .

The programming error that miscounted Gore and Bush
votes occurred because a computer program recorded
the votes as a date, reading 108 votes for Bush in
Randolph, for instance, as Jan. 8. Election officials,
examining the printed totals, saw a ''1'' recorded in
what they thought was the vote column and gave Bush
one vote instead of 108.
