Plywood floors

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Our house just has old plywood floors. We want to buy tounge and groove plywood to go over the old. Does anyone know if we can use polyurethane on them rather than paint? Will it hold up as well as paint? Thanks in advance.

I put on 3 coats of a good poly origionally. In high traffic areas I had to sand and re-apply once in 3 years.

Yes, you can use any finish you would use on any other wood floor, and it will hold up at least as long as paint, and probably longer, depending on what you use.

Have you considered staining them with a colored whitewash or something first and then putting poly. on them? One place I saw put on probably something like wallpaper paste, then front pages of newspapers, then poly. over that. For a kid's room it might be comic pages. At one time newspaper pages were used for wallpaper. It can be sanded off off flooring.

Thanks for your help. I hope it warms up for a couple of days so we can do it.
