PID importance in industry

greenspun.com : LUSENET : PID Controller Tuning : One Thread

Sir, I am in my final year of my undergraduate studies and am involved in the design of PID controller and want to know the importance of PID controller in industry with some examples and its advantages over other systems.

Regards, sathibabu

From my experience, PID control is commonly used in the following industries: Chemical, Petrochemical, Pulp & Paper, Oil & Gas, Food & Beverage, Municipal Water/Sewerage Facilities.. etc. I suspect that many, many other industries make use of this type of control. I normally see PID algorithms executed on PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), DCS (Distributed Control System) or single loop or standalone controllers. I would guess that other industries make use of this by incorporating PID algorithms in proprietary or OEM control packages, where its use may be transparent to the end user.

PID controllers are used to control process variables ranging from fluid flow, level, pressure, temperature, pH, consistency, density, position, O2/NOx concentration, etc..
