Grape (and other fruit) sugar: HOW?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I have heard that you can extract sugar from grapes (and presumably other fruit). How is this done and is it useable like regular sugar?

It could be done, you'd need to crush the fruit, get the juice, and boil the daylights out of it to evaporate the water. See what you can find on maple syrup/sugaring. It would be some variation on that process. Gerbil (new address)

I don't know about getting the sugar out since it would be a small amout for all the work. It would be easier to raise sorgum, sugar beets, or tap maple trees. But you can raise items high is natural sugar which means you have to add very little sugar to get it where you want it. I raise old fashoned squash (crook neck, Tahitian, Hubbard) so when I make pumpkin pie I can cut way back on sugar(1/2 cup or less per pie). Just check ratings on natural sugar content.
