You can order bulk (1 & 2 lbs) for about $4.50/lb of different varieties of yeast from King Arthur Flour, Norwich Vermont, 1-800-827- 6836, or check their website KingArthurFlour.com. I've never ordered from them, keep meaning to, but haven't gotten to it yet. I get their catalog and the prices look ok.

You can find bulk yeast at www.nicholsgardennursery.com

I've bought it before and gotten very nice results, but it's around $5-6 a pound. If you get to a Sam's Club, their bulk yeast is very inexpensive, about $2.00 lb last time I bought it, but I don't think it has alot of flavor.

Try North Farms coop at www.northfarm-coop.com/. This is the food coop website I belong to but I think they will sell to the public on their site.

Pamela, Try www.azurefarm.com The Red Star Active Dry yeast is $11.75 for 5 lbs, and they have a lot of other great bulk prices as well. OR, if you're going to need other items as well, go to www.bulkfoods.com- $12.90 for 5 lbs. They have a $4.95/order handling fee, but shipping is free. : ) For anybody else that's looking for good bulk prices, I've found www.americanspice.com and www.sfherb.com- their prices on spices, condiments, some baking needs etc. is great, and for dried fruits, nuts, etc. try www.bulkfoods.com hope this helps!

I have a question....doesn't the yeast get old? If you buy bulk does it stay "fresh". I never thought of buying it bulk because of that but if it will keep....I am buying bulk!! Thanks for letting me know.

I never had a problem with bulk yeast losing it's ability to raise bread. I stored it tightly sealed in the refrigerator, and am pretty sure that some of it kept for close to a year and was still good. Of course usually I used it up in several months.

I buy my bulk yeast at a little country Amish store for $2.30 a lb. I also purchase my flour in 50lb bags for 9.00 . I get much better results using this flour and yeast as i do purchasing it from the local market. (no telling how long it has been on the shelf).I usually sell bread at our church sale, and get lots of great comments.

I ordered a case of yeast in vaccum sealed foil (I think maybe there were 12 two pound packages) in 1992 from Happy Hovel (they advertise in Countryside Mag.) I am just now using up the last couple packages and it is still working fine. When I open a package I then keep it in the refrigerator. The unopened packages have sat on a shelf in a dry, cool room. diane

I keep bulk yeast in freezer, it really keeps for years, and the last is as good as the first. I just use it frozen, keep it in glass jar.
