A good start in looking up bars in San Francisco is Jame Chamberlin's "Saloons of San Francisco"

Jack's our oldest restaurant and Mayes Oyster our second oldest and the Old Clam House (thiurd or fourth) all had a bar and served food.

for bar's that did not serve food, probably the oldest is the Frsno Hotel at 1232 Grant which is now known as the Saloon.

Good luck on your research.

The Saloon in North Beach (Green & Fresno) is the oldest. The second oldest is the Little Shamrock on Lincoln near 9th.

Steve,

Here are some links that mention old S.F. bars and their histories:

http://www.templebar.org/history.html http://www.plumpjack.com/pjbalboa/history.html http://www.sfbrewing.com/history/history.html http://www.sfmuseum.org/hist6/midway.html http://www.sfmuseum.org/hist9/bcoast.html (this one lists establishment names, owners and addresses)

Hope that they help.

Thomas
