Seven die in helicopter crash off New Caledonia

Source: AFP|Published: Tuesday November 28, 3:19 PM

NOUMEA: Seven people were killed today when a helicopter crashed in a mountainous area of the French Pacific territory of New Caledonia, the high commissioner's office said.

Security forces found the wreckage and the cause of the crash was under investigation, it said.

Four of the victims were officials from a major nickel mining firm in the territory, including the chief executive, a company spokesman said.

Raphael Pidjot, 40, head of the SMSP mining company and the firm's general manager, technical director and finance director perished in the crash, which was initially attributed to bad weather.

SMSP is the top exporter of nickel from New Caledonia, which has close to a third of the world reserves of the mineral, and had been sold to the island's northern province in 1990 in order to placate pro-independence activists.

Falconbridge employee killed in helicopter crash

Employees of two Canadian companies were among seven people killed in a helicopter crash in the French Pacific territory of New Caledonia on Tuesday.

An environmental assessor who worked for a subsidiary of Canadian mining company Falconbridge and an employee of a Canadian aviation company were killed in the crash.

Also killed were four executives of the Societe Minieres du Sud Pacific (SMSP) and the helicopter pilot.

The crash occurred as the helicopter was flying from the New Caledonia capital of Noumea on the west coast to the Nakety nickel project located on the east coast.

The helicopter crashed in a mountain range. The cause is under investigation.

Falconbridge, the world's third largest nickel producer, is in talks with SMSP to develop a major new mine in New Caledonia.
