SO. AFRICA - Pilot identified after jet fighter crash

The South African Airforce pilot who died in a plane accident in Louis Trichardt in the Northern Province on Monday has been identified as Captain Piet Koster, SABC radio news reported on Tuesday.

His single seater Cheetah jet fighter hit the ground during a routine test flight.

Koster was a member of 2 Squadron at the local air base.

An inquiry has been launched to determine the cause of the accident.

The airforce has been using the Cheetah C since 1993 when it bought 38 of the aircraft from a local manufacturer.

The manufacturer - Atlas - modified Mirage jet fighters bought from France before the arms embargo came into force.

SA National Defence Force chief General Siphiwe Nyanda has expressed his regrets at Koster's death. - Sapa
