Building a body of knowledge

How about starting a register of books, journals etc. which include references of massage?? I know that when I get a new medical or health book I always look up to see if massage appears in the index.

In this way, between all of us we will be able to build up a body of knowledge about the uses of massage for different diseases and occasions.

Let me start with a format that will enable people to find the book quickly if needed:

Pain in Infants, Children, and Adolescents Schechter NL, Berde CB & Yaster M (editors) Williams & Wilkins, Maryland (1993)

Mentions massage in growing pains, physical therapy (for complex regional pain syndrome) and in sickle cell disease pain

Great advice Diana, I will certainly be collating what I have read over the past few years so as to make referencing easier.

I have been meaning to get around to this for some time as there is much I have collected from various sources and has been sitting about the house hotch potch

Thanks for the nudge!

Hi Diana and all members,

For those interested in doing the "study at home Modules" as well as a general reference for ALL massage therapists, I highly recommend the following Reference:

"Taber's Cyclopaedic Medical Dictionary" F.A. Davis Company ISBN 0-8036-0194-8

Similarly, as a reference on all diseases and protocols used in treatment (Mostly Medical):

"The Merck Manual" ISBN 0911910-10-7

Just don't get too caught up in all the diseases "we humans" can get involved with!!

Both texts are excellent resources now and for the future.

Thank you Mark. A suitable study text is just what I've been wondering about.

You might also investigate: A Physician's Guide to Therapeutic Massage: Its Physiological Effects and Treatment Applications by Dr. John Yates. This is an 100 page booklet (including references) on the benefits of massage therapy. It's available through the MTA of BC (Canada) - email mta@smartt.com

Thanks Karen

I have the short version of this book (it is 36 pages including references) and I have always known that there is an extensive version available. I have been intending to get it for the last few years and now you have given me a nudge in the right direction!
