Fire At Slovakian Nuclear Power Plant Not Serious

BRATISLAVA, Dec 5, 2000 -- (Agence France Presse) A fire at the Jaslovske-Bohunice nuclear power station in western Slovakia had no effect on safety at the plant, a spokesman said Monday.

Sunday's fire, caused by a short circuit in the auxiliary heating system, was quickly brought under control by a team of firefighters, said a spokesman at the plant, Dobroslav Dobak.

The station has four Russian-designed 440-megawatt VVER reactors. The first two are due to be shut down in 2006 and 2008.

Last year, concern over the reactor caused friction with Austria, which had threatened to block Slovakia's candidacy for EU membership unless it produced "acceptable and convincing plans" to shut down the two reactors.
