Norfolk Southern Radio Trains

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Southern Railway : One Thread

Does anyone know if Norfolk Southern still runs any radio trains? I have not seen one in about five years on the former Southern Railway St. Louis District. Also I would like to know what lines they are running on. Justin Dzan; Louisville, KY

A few radio cars have been restored to service for coal train service. I can't remember exactly where they run, but it is in Tennessee partly. The radio car and engine maintainer took a buyout several years ago. He primarily took care of the equipment. SR retained its own version of Locotrol.

I can confirm that the radio trains are occasionally running in Tennessee. I hear the DRC frequencies on my scanner in the Knoxville area as well as catching a rare glimpse of a train in service. I also see the radio control cars dead-heading on the head end of freight trains and sitting in the engine service area at Sevier Yard. AEP

I have a friend who produces HO Scale models of the Southern Radio Cars. If anyone is interested please email me at itspault@bellsouth.net
