Should I tell my friend about AS?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Asperger Adult Resources : One Thread

I have read quite a lot about Asperger’s Syndrome. My nephew has AS, and I myself have many AS features. I also have a good friend who I believe has AS. He has told me a great deal about his childhood and about the way he is today, and so much seems to fit with AS, including speech/literal problems and sensory integration dysfunction. He has also said that he wants to find out why he’s different from others. I can add that my friend is now in his thirties.

Here’s my question: Should I give him some of the good articles I have about AS? Should I tell him that I recognize myself from the articles and that maybe he will recognize himself too? Or will my friend feel hurt and upset when he finds out that I think he has Asperger’s Syndrome?

I often read that AS adults would have liked to know earlier that they had the Syndrome. Still, I am so hesitant (cowardly?) about directing my friend to the “right” path, for fear that it may harm our relationship. This is a real dilemma for me. I would appreciate any opinions and advice. Thanks!
