12.21.2000 00:12 RI - Flight from Warwick diverted due to smell WARWICK -- A USAirways flight from Warwick to Pittsburgh made an unscheduled landing in Albany on Tuesday evening after the pilot reported the smell of smoke in the cabin.

FAA inspectors and USAirways mechanics examined the Boeing 757 yesterday in Albany and discovered a faulty air-circulation fan, according to FAA spokesman Jim Peters. The fan was repaired and the Boeing 757 was put back into service.

The pilot did not declare an in-flight emergency on Tuesday but opted to cut the flight short as a precaution, Peters said. There was no fire evident, and no failure of any mechanical or electronic system aboard the aircraft.

With firefighters standing by, USAirways Flight 1823 landed without incident at about 7:10 p.m. and taxied to the terminal. Some of the 126 passengers were able to get seats on other flights in the next several hours, but others were booked into local hotels for the night and made other travel arrangements yesterday.
