What is the African Methodist Episcopal Church position on abortion?

We must all remember that as children of God, all AMES feel that abortion is a sin against God. Abortion is murder with malice. There must be an effort on our part to teach that killing is killing. The fact is that at the moment of conception a real person has been born. I believe that there needs to be a real effort to educate our congregations in this area.

I don't think you will find a specific rule on abortion but it is easy to see that we (AMEs) do not support abortion. Pastor Paris

I thought Pastor Alton was agreeing with me. I just wanted a little more substance to the discussion. The real issue is sexual misconduct. I have not read the Discipline's ruling on abortion, but I plan to this afternoon. I really had not thought to even question the church's position.

Actually, I think Pastor Paris was agreeing with you, but to clarify: no, the official AME position is not to make our own gods, but to serve the One True God. Thee are points stated in our Book of Discipline against abortion, and our position has been against it. I also agree with you on what the real issue is: sexual misconduct.

Is that the official position of the AMEC? That we as citizens can create our own gods, and decide what is best. If that is the case, then you have your answer to the question "Where have all the flowers gone (AME's)

You have spoken well. Unfortunately, the majority of our citizens believe that they can make their own gods. Pastor Paris

"If men struggle with each other and strike a woman with child so that she gives birth prematurely, yet there is no injury, he shall surely be fined as the woman's husband may demand of him, and he shall pay as the judges decide. But if there is any further injury, then you shall appoint as penalty life for life" Exodus 21:22-23 This is one of the bibles ordinances that deals with personal injury. It tells us that intentional injury to an unborn child is punishable as life for life. I would imagine that the only position the A.M.E.C. could possibly take would be the position of non-sanction. A lot of people discuss reasons for abortion. There is no reason for abortion. Generally people want to discuss the rights of the parent(s). If you don't want a child, then do not engage in activity that creates a child, very simple. Abortion is not a substitute for bith control or abstinence. The bible clearly recognizes the rights of an unborn child. Of course, I have been surprised before. Is there another another spin on abortion that I have no knowledge of? Is the bible in the case of abortion to be ignored as an out of date guide to life. If thats the case, then why do we worship? If we are allowed to pick and chose which edits we follow, then we should write our own bible (and a lot of us have) and live as we choose, not in faith, but in frivolity.
